This is why front-wheel-drive sedans, hatchbacks, and many minivans almost always need chains on the front axle. Why the wrong axle feels so bad on snow

Chains do more than help a car move. They change how the vehicle reacts when you steer, brake, and roll downhill. Put them on the wrong end and the grip balance gets out of whack.

  • Wrong axle on a front-wheel-drive car: the rear may feel planted, but the front can still wash wide when you turn or try to climb.

A clean install starts before you touch the chains. Do a dry run at home. Lay them flat. Untwist them. Check the hooks, cams, or tighteners. Then match the set to the exact tire size on the sidewall, not a guess from memory.

When you pull over to fit them on the road, get as far from traffic as you can. Set the brake. Fit the chains to the approved tires, center them on the tread, fasten them fully, then drive a short distance and recheck tension. Loose chains can slap the wheel well, brake lines, or struts.

Keep your speed down and stay off bare pavement when you can. Chains are made for snow and ice, not long dry stretches. The faster you go, the more heat and shock you put into the links and fasteners. That’s bad news for the chains and for the car.
